- (7.5 Out of 10) Dead Man is a film that hammers its themes and other artistic merits home, but feels more of an exercise than a statement. While it subverts the tired-and-worn clichés of the western (showdowns, black-and-white characters, etc.) with thoughts on spirituality and the fight between good vs. evil, the film also does not have the positive elements of western flicks either (namely suspense and buildup in its action scenes) and its final shot-- even if it properly invokes the sentiments-- also seems a bit too literal and more explicit than it should be. Dead Man may be finely photographed and well-acted by all players, but it forgets that many westerns are, even if disguised, still full of thematic merit.
- the oddest western i have ever seen. a unique style of humor and very eccentric characters. probably need to watch a few times to get the most out of it. my favorite by jim jarmusch.
