(9.0 Out of 10) Martin Scorsese has often played his movies strictly for realism not imagination, as he does with Mean Streets. The film is gritty in authenticity and stark in its depiction of New York’s crime-ridden Little Italy. The dramatic story is as much about film kineticism as one can get, in the way that Mean Streets is both lively and carries predetermined story mechanics that work towards the final resolution as an absolute cause-and-effect in such a dangerous neighborhood. While Scorsese’s direction is solid, the screenplay features many static characters and Harvey Keitel’s central character is slightly boring. De Niro’s performance may be well done and energetic, but is also often overpraised due to his character’s shallow simplexes. Despite these drawbacks, Mean Streets is a timeless piece of American Cinema that could have only been made in the 1970’s.
