- (7.0 Out of 10) More plot than story driven, The French Connection sure gets a while to get going. The bulk of the movie concerns cops tailing the bad guys, while realistic in that sense that it shows that in investigation nothing happens quickly, it also lacks tension until the last half hour when there is the often talked about car chasing a train scene that both is exciting and shows the obsessions of the Gene Hackman character who has an almost total lack of care for anyone else’s safety when it comes to solving the case. With that said, the Hackman character is also not a perfect hero, he is depicted as a bigot and often a screw up. The obsession and the lack of regard for others is shown profoundly in the last scene, yet still his motivations due to a lack of characterization are still often hazy. However, The French Connection ends on a where-are-they-now slideshow of the characters that undermines the question mark that would of worked so well as the end. A thin and slow paced but still somewhat intriguing film.
