- (9.1 Out of 10) The Black Angels album, Passover, updates the psychedelic and garage sound of the 1960’s scene for the 2000‘s. There’s hardly a bad moment on it, aside from the album closer Call To Arms, that despite at first sounding intoxicating, seems to have a too lengthy fade out. About half of the record is flawless, conjuring up some catchy structures amongst the swirls of druggy haze. There is even some protest music on the superb, The First Vietnamese War, and Manipulation invokes its title with its acerbic guitar tone paired with singer Alex Mass’ hushed deliver. Bloodhounds On My Trail has a country twang to its instrument work, as well as a hoe-down bounce, but still fits into their style. Passover is a truly great album that feels as nostalgic as it does modern.
