- 8.5 Out of 10) The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me is the third long player by Brand New: it brings the emotion of mainstream emo-pop and merges it with quiet-to-noisy song structures of old-fashioned emo, of which, was more in line with experimentative post-rock (and punk, but that specific quality is mostly absent). The songs usually start out extremely harmless and subdued, then at the opportune moment the band sets the fuse on their instruments to explode in a fury of slashing sound. While Brand New can surely do it well, at about track nine of this twelve-song album they get too predictable, and although it may still be enjoyable after that point, it’s also mechanical. Before that tunes like Sowing Season Ya and Dagauseger show easy command of this structure and the instrumental Welcome To Bangkok is a gleefully shot missle. The other delicate laments include the second and third tracks, Millstone and Jesus, that feel a bit too low-key at that early point in the album. Limousine (MS rebridge) is too lengthy, and the album also has an unnecessary instrumental in the untitled track, and the predictable conclusive settling Handcuffs. One, however, does feel like they are nitpicking, as the album still has a plethora of good ideas. It still may be a winner, but one hopes it would have had a bit more diversity.
- Just checked them out and love it. I must get this album.
